This July, challenge yourself to reduce your plastic waste.
You might ask, what is Plastic Free July?
Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.
Think about some areas in your life that you use a lot of plastic. When I first started reducing my plastic waste, I just thought about my daily routine. From waking up and brushing my teeth, to cooking dinner and showering, where do I use most of my plastic?
As someone who tries to reduce my waste as much as I can, I've developed some tips for people who want to also make a difference!
Here are 5 tips to reducing your plastic waste:
ALWAYS be prepared: You are less likely to accept a plastic straw or plastic cup if you come prepared! I always carry a straw and mason jar in my bag and ask restaurants or coffee shops to fill my jar instead!
Carry around a reusable bag: In my reusable bag, I carry my straw, mason jar, and an empty food container. This is useful in many ways, I can pack leftovers, get my favorite drink at a coffee shop, AND I have a bag in case I need to stop by the grocery store on the way home!
Refuse: The easiest way to reduce your plastic waste is to REFUSE! Refuse a plastic bag when you just bought one or two things at the grocery store. Refuse a free plastic water bottle because you brought your own reusable water bottle. Refuse buying produce that are prepackaged and buy fresh ones!
Don't beat yourself up about it: Reducing plastic waste and helping the environment is a global and collective effort. It's better if millions of people practice zero waste imperfectly than just one person perfectly. It's okay if you forgot your bag or your cup. Just remember it for next time!
Tell your friends and family: Like I said in the last one, it's better if you get your friends and family to try and reduce their plastic waste than it is for your to perfect it. Be a leader and influence others to make this small change for the environment.
Plastic Free July is a GLOBAL MOVEMENT! Join so many others this month in trying to reduce our carbon footprint. Spread the word to your friends and family and challenge yourselves!
